Here's our latest letter from Grant!
Hello CFGB,
First off, I miss you all so much it hurts. I miss putting my hand around the back of your necks and passing along whatever it is I want to say to you. I miss position work, block work, perfecting squats and telling you to pick the damn bar up. I miss the fact that anyone can say 'don't be a pussy' without hurting someone's feelings. I miss you.
I'm currently in week 5 of 14 of basic. Ft. Benning is definitely a challenge physically and mentally. Over the last 5 weeks I've had mostly ups, but I've had a few lows. I've repelled down a 40 foot wall as well as climbed up and over a 40 foot net. Led a team to win a wall climb obstacle as well as another team obstacle course challenge to a second place by 2 sec. Did the gas chamber and that was not fun…….at all. So far we rucked a 2,4,&6 mile route. Just a few blisters, but I always just think back to the pictures of Will's feet during his Best Ranger training and I realized they were not that bad. I was hired, fired, rehired and refired Platoon Guide. The PG is the guy who makes all the decisions and is generally not the most liked guy. But it does have its benefits as I realized how much fun it is to get in the faces of a bunch of 18 year old know it alls and eyeball the buckets out of them until they cower and walk away 🙂
I've picked up the habit of keeping my shit organized and making sure I'm prepared the night before. My 2 mile is down to 13:24 and I'm planning on hitting a sub 13 min in the next 2 weeks. My drill sergeants are probably the best 2 men that I could have to mentor me to become an infantry soldier. DS Green and DS Rodgers. One likes me and one I'm not sure if he does, as he is the one that keeps firing me. I gotta admit though getting fired is like going on a vacation. I can just go about my business and not listen to my own voice yelling. I annoy myself. My low moments here have been the fact that I was unable to receive mail for over a month. The other was when we were qualifying our weapons with iron sights and I kept making the same mistake over and over. Finally I related everything back to a good snatch. The details: slow first pull into an excellent hang position, feet going from balls to heels back to front midfoot to pulling your ass under that bar as fast as humanly possible. Details. I was missing a detail as important as that first pull and once I found my flow I shot with confidence and I qualified.
Self doubt is a horrible thing and the moment it gets into your head you must get rid of it or it'll eat you alive. I was almost a victim myself. So when in doubt, stop looking at the big picture and concentrate on the small details.
You would be very proud of me. I get 3 slices of bread and pancakes/waffles/french toast for breakfast and 3 slices of bread adn a piece of cake for lunch and dinner everyday. I get it strictly to trade. It's awesome. There are so many dudes here that trade their eggs so I'm pretty close to getting my 5 eggs and 4 slices of bacon every day. I'm eating just as well if not better than I do at home. I'm keeping up with the young bucks just fine without eating that shit and I keep going all day long. So if you've signed up for LuRong don't be a pussy and win that f'ing thing. Besides that this week we're going to do some land navigation and then start using our weapons in some situational tasks. It's going to be awesome. I'm pretty sure I get to throw 2 grenades in the next week too!
Everything is going well here and I'll be coming home in under 10 weeks so make sure you're busting your ass and hitting your goals. When I get home it's going to be full steam ahead to the Open. I just started programming today. It's going to be a hoot, I promise.
I want to also thank all of you for the continued support of CFGB in my absence and know this-I will never rest until we are officially the best gym on this ball we live on. From our recreational to our competitive CrossFitters we will be number 1. I love you all and miss the buckets out of you.
